Kue Petition play presented today
Hawaii Island residents are invited to a re-enactment of “Ka Lei Maile Alii — The Queen’s Women” at 1 p.m. today at Kuhio Hale, Waimea’s Hawaiian Homes Hall.
The one-act play recounts a now-famous meeting held in Hilo in 1897 regarding the Kue Petition. Signed by more than 90 percent of the Native Hawaiian population, the petition protested annexation of the Hawaiian Kingdom.
The play is based on a newspaper article by Miriam Michelson who attended the 1897 meeting. Written by Didi Lee Kawai and performed by members of the Ka Lei Maile Alii Hawaiian Civic Club of Honolulu, the play re-creates what it was like to participate in the petition’s signing.
The Kue Petition display that toured the U.S. and was exhibited on the National Mall will be displayed during the event. Poster prints highlighting names of kupuna of North and South Kohala and Hamakua who signed the petition will also be exhibited.
This program is free and all are welcome. Attendees are invited to dress in period clothing of the late 1800s.

Disabilities panel meeting in Hilo
The mayor’s Committee on People with Disabilities meets at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Hawaii County Building, Mayor’s Lanai, 25 Aupuni St., Hilo.
The meetings are open to the public. The agenda will be posted on the county’s website.

State library system earns technology award
The Hawaii State Public Library System has earned the first State of Hawaii Excellence in Technology Award in the category of improving state operations.
Over the past 18 months, HSPLS Chief Technology Officer Paola Saibene and her Electronic Services Support Section staff have implemented a variety of technological improvements, upgrades and enhancements. Those include free wireless Internet connectivity in all libraries statewide, the replacement of 1,400 desktop and laptop computers using various grants and state funds, a new public access portal, complete network redesign, massive security implementation and data center virtualization and storage consolidation.
